Chapter 1 What is a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier?
Actually this is a Good question and the simplest answer is no one truly knows. Anyone
researching the breed can see many histories indicating which breeds compromise the
make up of this dog but in all honesty these are purely speculative and may be right or
may be wrong.
And instead of just posting up the history that many registration bodies have available
I've tried to find information which can either agree with the common lines of thought or
information that may shed more light on the subject even if it disagrees with the common
belief.
The Teddy is a type of rat terrier that was developed here in the US. Some say they are
merely a short legged Rat Terrier or what is commonly called a "Type B" Rat Terrier.

unique and distinct differences. Not only is the Teddy carrying a shorter leg length but
also more thickness of bone and a heavier muscularity. The Teddy's chest is also
deeper
and slightly wider with a smooth curve descending from the top of the sternum to the
xyphoid.
As an obvious rat terrier they are indeed a utility dog in that they were and still are a
working terrier. Although some think they are merely a modern play on working terriers
in both my experience and experience of others these little terriers can and do work.
So where did they come from? That is the toughest question and will most likely never be
answered, completely.
Many have attested that these are descendants of the terriers brought from England
and
the British isles during the heavy immigration from those lands during the mid 1800's.
During one of my research hunts I decided to wade through old newspapers that were
available online through the internet. And although I found many occurances of the term
“rat terrier” I was hard pressed to find anything that gave credence to where the dogs
came from and even worse, no evidence indicating that a squattier rat terrier existed or
at
the least was written about.
